Educator, composer and baritone David Newman is the newest member of the uTheory team.
Famous for his teaching songs, which have millions of views on YouTube, David will focus on developing ear training lessons, exercises and games for uTheory.
He released his music theory songs in a 2019 album, “The Well Trained Ear.” They're widely used by elementary, middle, high school and college teachers.
uTheory is a mastery-based online learning platform for music theory, rhythm and ear training. Students learn through engaging video lessons, individualized practice, immediate specific feedback and practice tailored to their needs.
David brings a wealth of teaching experience. For over 10 years, he has taught aural skills, music theory and voice on the faculty of James Madison University. He previously taught at University of California Davis, San Jose State, University of Virginia and Shenandoah Conservatory. He holds a BM in Voice Performance and a MM in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, where he studied theory and composition with Stefan Young, Anthony Kosar, Joel Phillips and Ronald Arnatt.
He also maintains an active performing career as a classical singer, and can be heard on the Philips, Dorian, Analekta, K617 and Naxos labels. Despite COVID-19 precautions, David has continued to make music and inspire others to join in the harmony with his innovative drive-in choir concept, profiled in both the LA Times and NY Times.
David is creating ear training exercises, lessons and games for uTheory, initially focusing on dictation and sight singing. He's currently working on Solfege Sally, a dictation game in the vein of Hasbro's popular Simon toy, and Pitchy Bird, a singing game modeled after the viral Flappy Bird game.
